… Soon we’ll see nice green leaves on the trees. Soon, Spring will arrive.
Happy Saturday, everyone!

Walking…
March 12, 2010 | Filed Under City Streets and Sidewalks, Dogs, New Yorkers | 8 Comments

A city dog owner reminds me of a mailman. Despite the weather — rain, snow, shine, heat and cold — he or she goes out to walk the dogs. It was a very cold day when I took this photo but both dogs and owner seem warm enough.

Taking people places. This subway runs above ground for a few blocks before going underground again.

The train came from this station pictured here on 125th Street in Harlem.
MOTION THURSDAY. Check it out and post your own photo of a subject in motion. Join in on the fun!

All Bundled Up!

Lately, the weather has become warmer but a few days ago it was freezing. I like how the kids are well dressed and bring some color to the streets of the city.

Ruby Tuesday: Store Display

This is the window of a food store on the Upper West Side. It carries many food products from Italy.

Ed. Note: Mizhelle in the comments section asked what is on display. In the red boxes are Perugina Panettone. Panettone is an Italian holiday cake — a rich sweet cake with raisins, orange peel, pinenuts and anise. It’s baked in a special tall mold called a panettone pan and served at Christmas, New Year’s and celebrations such as weddings and christenings. Panettone is also served as a bread, coffeecake or dessert. You can read more about panettone here. In the photo below are cans of extra virgin olive oil (Castelvitrano oil). I’m not sure what’s in the brown box above. Probably another type of dessert.

One Man’s Junk…
March 8, 2010 | Filed Under City Streets and Sidewalks | 16 Comments

… Is another man’s treasure.
Someone threw out boxes of old records on a busy street corner. Stuck in remnants of old and dirty snow, many people stopped to look into the boxes.

Ed. Note: Tracy wondered if I found something I liked. No, I didn’t bother looking or touching anything. I only stopped long enough to take the photo.
Another Note: In response to some more comments — NO it is not acceptable to throw one’s personal garbage out in the street like that. If the person is caught, he or she will get a ticket.

Shadow Shot Sunday
March 7, 2010 | Filed Under City Streets and Sidewalks, Photo Blogging Theme Day, Shadow Shot Sunday, Shadows, Snow, Winter | 22 Comments

Traces of snow and some shadows on one of the many quiet streets of the city. Although they’re similar, I couldn’t figure out which photo to post, so you get both. ;-) Which one do you prefer?
Visit HEY HARRIET to see a fun lineup of shadow shot contributions from others. I’m very behind in visiting other blogs this week. Please forgive me.

Peter and the Snow
March 5, 2010 | Filed Under Animal Rescue, City Streets and Sidewalks, Dogs, Snow, Winter | 13 Comments

Thankfully, today, the snow is almost gone on the streets and sidewalks of the city. There are only traces left. I actually took this photo on New Year’s eve, when we had our last snowfall of 2009. It seems so long ago now, especially when we’ve had a more snowstorms since then.
This is Peter Parker, my neighbor’s dog. In case you’re not familiar with the Marvel comic book character, Peter Parker is the real name of superhero Spider-man’s alterego. You can guess that there’s a Spider-man lover in the household of this dog. ;-) The puppy Peter was adopted from a pet rescue shelter. He loves the snow. His photo reminded me of the animals affected by the quakes in Haiti and most recently, Chile.
If you’d like to help the animals survivors in Haiti, go here.
If you’d like to help the animal survivors in Chile, go here.
GreaterGood.org runs both programs. The charitable organization provides care for not only people but rescued animals. You can read more about them on their site.
Or you can simply provide aid to the local animal shelter/rescue organization in your neighborhood.
Non human animals need help, too.

Motion Thursday & ShelterBox
March 4, 2010 | Filed Under Disaster Relief Organizations, Motion Thursday, New Yorkers, Photo Blogging Theme Day, ShelterBox | 12 Comments

Thanks, everyone, for your kind words regarding my family emergency. Thanks are looking up. I’m still behind on visiting everyone’s blogs. Please bear with me. I’ll stop by soon.
The snow has pretty much melted all over the city but this is the way it looked last week — Lots of snow everywhere and lots of people moving around. Despite the circumstances, you can’t keep a New Yorker down.
This is my contribution to the photo blogging theme day, MOTION THURSDAY. Stop by to see other entries. You can also join in on the fun by posting your motion photos.
On another note, if you’re interested in helping the earthquake victims of Chile and are unsure of where to make a donation, you might want to consider the international disaster relief agency ShelterBox. They deliver emergency shelter (a ten- person tent, blankets, water purification, storage equipment, a stove, cooking utensils, basic tools, children’s activity pack and other vital items) to people affected by disaster worldwide.
I first mentioned ShelterBox after the quake in Haiti. They’ve helped many people there and are now helping the earthquake victims of Chile. You can read about it here and here.

Ecological Day and Ruby Tuesday
March 2, 2010 | Filed Under Ecological Day, Photo Blogging Theme Day, Ruby Tuesday, Snow, Winter | 20 Comments

This is one of the many entrances to Central Park. Nature looks so beautiful, blanketed with snow. We only have one earth, so let’s be good to it, folks. This photo blogging theme, started by Sonia of LEAVES OF GRASS, falls on the second day of every month.

I imagine that these two are on their way to play in the snow in Central Park. How could I miss that red, which is perfect for the photo blogging theme, RUBY TUESDAY, started by Mary the Teach. Stop by WORK OF THE POET to see other Ruby Tuesday photos.
