Shadow Shot Sunday: Lighthouse Shadow

November 29, 2008 | Filed Under Lighthouses, Photo Blogging Theme Day, Shadow Shot Sunday, Shadows, The Bronx | 28 Comments

The shadow of a lighthouse cast against the wall of another building.  This lighthouse is located on top of a business building in the Bronx.  It’s not open to visitors.  Below is a photo of the lighthouse taken on a different day.

Happy Shadow Shot Sunday!

Ed. Note:  Someone asked whether there’s water nearby.  Yes, the building is near the Harlem River.  Another reader asked if the lighthouse works.  The answer is it does now.  The lighthouse is about 100 years old and for many years, it did not work.  In the late 90s, the lighthouse was fixed to commemorate it’s centennial anniversary.  I’ve passed by it in a car, at night, when it’s lit up.  It’s a nice sight — nice and bright.

In the Bronx

A quiet street in the Bronx in the early morning.   Happy Friday, all!

Ed. Note:  In the comments section, June asked about Yankee Stadium.  Interestingly enough, the new stadium is pictured in this photo.  However, it’s really hard to see here, so I didn’t bother mentioning it.  Since she did, I’ll tell you where it is or should I make you guess first?   ;-)    Okay, the construction of the new Yankee Stadium is located in the middle of the photo, in between the buildings, right beneath the sun.  Do you see it?  June also asked about Yankee Stadium photos.  I have two photos in the archives.  If  you missed them and are interested in seeing them, go to the CATEGORIES section and look under STADIUMS or YANKEE STADIUM.  As I get the opportunity, more stadium photos will follow in the future.

My First Hawk

October 16, 2008 | Filed Under Birds, Hawks, New York City Wildlife, The Bronx | 21 Comments

I was so excited Thursday morning when I had the opportunity to take photos of a hawk for the first time.  It sat with dignity not far from where I normally see the pigeons.  Earlier, I’d seen a large flock of pigeons but at that moment, they were no where in sight.  I suppose none of them wanted to become breakfast for the hawk.

Interestingly enough, there were lots of sparrows around.  The hawk paid no attention to them and they didn’t seem afraid of him (I’d like to think of the bird as a male).   The hawk rested on the rooftop of another building.  I took several photos but they didn’t turn out well.   The sun position was not in my favor and I simply need a nicer camera with a better lens.  I  tried my best with what I have.   ;-)

For a while, the hawk watched me take his photo and then I think he got tired of me.  He flew to another roof top and then finally out of sight.  I wonder if I’ll see him again.  I hope so.

There are several hawks that live all over the city (and other boroughs like the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island).  The most famous pair of New York City hawks are Pale Male and Lola.  They took up residence and built a nest on the 12th floor window ledge of a fancy Fifth Avenue building on the Upper East Side.  A controversy arose when the building management (co-op board) made the decision to remove the nest.  After several people and groups protested, the board decided to rebuild the nest.  The birds live a celebrity life.

Today’s Flowers: Sunflowers

September 28, 2008 | Filed Under Bloggers, Colors, Flowers, Leaves of Grass blog, Photo Blogging Theme Day, Sunflowers, The Bronx, Today's Flowers, Yellow | 53 Comments

I passed by a house in the Bronx and to my surprise saw sunflowers in the front yard growing over six feet tall.  They were very impressive-looking.  Sunflowers are my favorite.

Stop by TODAY’S FLOWERS to see some really beautiful flower shots by others.

On another note, Sonia of LEAVES OF GRASS is celebrating her third-year blog anniversary this Monday.  Congratulations, Sonia, what a wonderful blog you have!  Let’s stop by and wish her well.
