Harriet Tubman Memorial

September 27, 2012 | Filed Under Harlem, Memorials, Sculptures | 10 Comments

This impressive-looking sculpture is in Harlem.   I’ve passed by several times and don’t know why I haven’t noticed it until now.  The 2007 memorial sculpture is entitled Swing Low by artist Alison Saar.   It’s a sculpture of Harriet Tubman, abolitionist organizer and Underground Railroad leader who lived from 1822-1913.  You can read a nice and detailed explanation of the sculpture and it’s symbolism  HERE.

From the archives:

One of the public library branches.  I love that not only can I borrow books from the library, but I can also borrow DVDs, CDs and video tapes to my heart’s content.  Very cool!

Just Two City Lions

 Patience

Patience and Fortitude, are probably the most famous lions in the city.  They sit in front of the New York Public Library.  As you face the library, Patience sits on the left and Fortitude sits on the right.  I’m tempted to tell you that I heard a very low growl come out of one of them, but I’m afraid Maryam will say it’s the voices in my head and tell me to take my medication.  So, I’m keeping what I hear to myself.   ;-)    For the holidays, they are dressed in wreaths around their necks.  There’s even a little ceremony, which includes carolers, that takes place when the lions are wreathed.

She is So Serious

This lady is centered on top of an apartment building entrance along with two hungry-looking lions.  Maybe that’s why she’s so serious-looking.  A minute before taking the photo, I could have sworn I heard a lion growl. Seriously.  Maybe it was just me.  ;-)
