THE RED LEAF SAID TO THE VINE

“I will hang on as long as I can,”

The red leaf said to the vine.

“But when my time comes to flutter down,

Please, don’t let me hear you whine.

“I know you’ll be lonely when I’m gone,

But this much I know is true:

When spring comes around after the snows,

More leaves will sprout along you;

“Leaves more charming and witty than I,

Leaves of a much brighter hue;

So do not mourn my passing too much—

It’s been nice clinging to you.”

LITTLE CRIMSON AUTUMN TREE

Little crimson autumn tree,

Do your leaves blush just for me?

Or will others see you too,

Tree ablaze with ruddy hue?

THE RED LEAF’S SOLILOQUY

Why am I here (said the red leaf)

Among all these leaves of dull brown?

Surely I’m much more resplendent—

Perhaps even fit for a crown.

So much more have I to offer

Than leaves that are yellow or green;

To think that no would notice—

Unthinkable! Oh, how obscene!

My veins are flowing with scarlet,

With royal vermilion and red,

While all those leaves that are common

Move sludge through their dull veins instead.

Choose me above all the others

My glory will last, never fade;

I am the leaf of your longings,

Most exquisite leaf ever made.

RED HAT

Red hat, I am lonesome.

Red hat, are you free?

Red hat, please consider

Coming home with me.

I need a companion,

One who’ll warm my head;

I think you’ll do nicely,

Hat of brilliant red.

You’re the warmest color,

Not like blue or green—

Red hat at the vendor’s,

Red hat, you’re my queen.

CHITCHAT

On the bench friends sit and chat,
Wearing neither gloves nor hat,
But their arms and legs betray
How they’re feeling anyway:
Legs crossed tight to ward off chill,
Arms tucked in with a good will;
Yet the smiles on each cold face
Are not frozen stiff in place;
Animatedly they talk
As they sit beside the walk,
Laughing, making small chitchat—
Friendship is a lot like that.
