God’s Thumbnail

As seen from the Upper West Side, this photo was taken on January 9, 2011.
I once read the description ‘God’s Thumbnail’ for this moon shape.
I don’t remember where I read it but have always liked the description.

A beautiful sky, lamp post, green light, hanging sneakers… Hanging sneakers!?
I posted a photo a while back with the sneakers in hanging high from a lamp post. Many readers wrote that it had to do with drugs and gangs. Then a reader who’d grown up in Brooklyn emailed me with her explanation that school kids would throw the sneakers on to telephone lines or in this case lamp posts to signify the end of school and the beginning of summer, "when you didn’t have to be in shoes any more." It was just a simple gesture of freedom and kids looking forward to summer. I like that explanation the best.

"Next time a sunrise steals your breath or a meadow of flowers leave you speechless, remain that way. Say nothing, and listen as heaven whispers, "Do you like it? I did it just for you." ~ Max Lucado
