Ecological Day – September 2, 2008

From the archives:

Sonia of Leaves of Grass has started a monthly event called ECOLOGICAL DAY, where bloggers have the chance to post about ecological issues of their choice.

Even in the city of cement and tall buildings, one can see signs of nature all around.  Unfortunately, it’s sometimes marred by litter.  These flowers (umm… someone please tell me its name) cover two big trees and look spectacular.  However, for a few weeks, I noticed something that spoiled their beauty — a plastic bag, which was meant to be garbage, had found its way and stayed stuck on the top of one of the tree branches.  I would have removed the plastic bag myself but it was just too high for me to reach.  What a real eyesore.  Only recently, have I noticed that it is no longer there.  I wonder if someone else removed it or if the wind blew it away somewhere else.

Keep America Beautiful, an education organization, reports that 18% of all litter pollutes streams and waterways.  According to the United Nations Environment Programme, plastic litter is responsible for the death of over a million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals yearly.

Ways we can prevent litter from negatively affecting our environment are by learning how to get rid of our garbage properly — making sure we use trash cans, making sure that garbage cans lids are properly closed, making sure that plastic bags are tightly secured, and making sure we use recyclable or biodegradable bags.

If you’d like to participate in ECOLOGICAL DAY, go here for the guidelines.

HAPPY ECOLOGICAL DAY, all!  Let’s be good to our Earth.  It’s the only one we have.   ;-)

Paz (begging anyone to tell her the name of the flowers)

Ed. Note:  Thanks everyone for your help with the flower name.  I now know it’s called Hibiscus/Rose of Sharon/Rose of Althea.  I like to learn something new from you all.  Cool!
