Where’s the Fire?

On my way to my friend’s home, walking down the sidewalk, I heard a lot of sirens behind me.  Within a few seconds, several fire trucks sped past me.  When I reached my friend’s apartment building, I saw that all the trucks had stopped in front of her building.  That’s not what I wanted to see.  Several of the firemen walked into the building.  A few of them remained outside.  I didn’t see any signs of a fire and the firemen weren’t blocking the entrance.  I wondered if I should go into the building.

My friend lives on the 17th floor and I didn’t want to get stuck in her elevator or building if there was a fire.   Last year, there was a problem with her elevators and I had to walk DOWN the 17 flights of stars.  While it wasn’t fun, I suppose it was better than being forced to walk UP 17 flights of stairs.

Someone asked one of the firemen if we could go inside and he told us that we could.   Apparently there was no fire but they’d come for something else.   So, I went into the building and rode up the elevator in peace.  By the time I came out the building, most of the trucks had left.  I don’t know why the firemen came to the building but I’m glad there was no fire.
