… Another hawk. 

Or perhaps it’s the same hawk that I saw the other day.   I’m not sure.  But as I was walking, again, in the park, the scenario was the same.  I saw no birds or squirrels when I normally would.  I looked up in the trees but didn’t see a hawk.  It was super cold and an hour later, my fingers felt like they were about to fall off.  I finally decided to put away my camera.  That’s when I spotted the hawk sitting on the branches of one of the tallest trees in the park.  It was very windy but she sat still as if the winds didn’t bother her.   Instead, she focused on another tree not too far away from her.   Correction, she focused on a group of starlings in another tree not too far from her.  Those starlings sure looked nervous.   I didn’t hang around to see what happened.  It was just too cold. 

This post is for Ecological Day, which was started by Sonia of Leaves of Green.   This photo blogging theme day falls on the second day of each month.  When we are good to our Earth, we’re good to the wild life and nature — like the hawk and starlings.   When we’re good to the wild life and nature, we’re good to our Earth.   We only have one Earth, folks, so let’s be good to it.

As usual, I’m late for Ecological Day, which is a photo blogging theme day started by Sonia of Leaves of Grass.  Normally, it falls on the second day of each month.   Since I’m late, this is why I like the old saying, "Better late than never."   Here’s my tardy post for Ecological Day.

Now that the holidays are over, you’ll see Christmas trees on curbsides, all over the city, and sections of the parks.  At this part of Riverside park, the pile of trees has grown.   The Department of Sanitation will pick up the trees for recycling.  They will turn the trees into wood chips and compost and use them to nourish the trees and plants of the city streets and gardens.    The other day, Gisela of Guildwood Gardens left a very informative comment under one of my posts about why we should buy real Christmas trees, instead of artificial ones.  This is what she wrote:

"Christmas trees are not cut in the forest but farmed and can be recycled after Christmas.
But Artificial Christmas trees can not be recycled.
I am encouraging everyone to purchase real trees now and in the future.
Artificial trees contain lead, so they should be disposed of with other household hazardous products."

Recycling helps us.  We only have one Earth, so let’s be good to it, folks.

The Broadway Malls is a landscaped median strip that stretches down Broadway from 60th to 168th Street. Flowering trees, shrubs, plants, flowers like tulips, daffodils, muscari are planted and maintained yearly and benches are provided for people to sit, relax and enjoy their New York City surroundings from the middle of a busy New York street.   I’ve posted photos of the malls several times before (You can see one example of an earlier post here).  People and birds, even the squirrels enjoy it.  It’s a good place to enjoy a little bit of nature in the city.

Sonia of Leaves of Grass inspired me to post this photo when she posted her own sets of captivating photos of vine-covered buildings for Ecological Day.  I’d taken this photo earlier but never had a chance to post it until now.  Every time I pass by this building, I’m fascinated by the vines that cover its side year-round.  I love how nature simply takes over.  There’s no stopping it.  I love the greenery but I also love when the leaves change colors during the Autumn season.

Ecological Day normally takes place the second day of every month.  This is my belated Ecological Day post.

Remember:  We only have one earth, so let’s be good to it.
