Great Rose Window

December 26, 2009 | Filed Under Cathedrals/Churches, Stained Glass Windows, The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine

This stained-glass window is located above the front entrance of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the largest Gothic-style cathedral in the world.

The window is made from over 10,000 pieces of colored glass, making it the largest stained-glass window in the United States.

Hmmm… I think I’d like to learn how to make stained-glass windows.

  1. Fun Tanita Fact: in high school, I worked in a stained glass factory. I can tell you how to make that window. It takes a lot of work. And saws. And lots of water. Tiny cuts on your hands. Glass dust. And a whooooole bunch of steps.

I was a little peon, just cutting out one shape, using only two kinds of bandsaw and an etcher. But I felt like I was part of the big league teams that designed them and glued them together and mounted them on high scaffolds. It was an experience. Dirty, wet, cold, painful. But beautiful.

  5. Do learn, if you can. Or at least learn how to use stained glass paints. It gives such pleasure and feeling of accomplishment.

There is a much smaller rose window in the church we used to attend in NY. Very lovely.

Stunning. I like when the different colors of light come through. So, you want to make your own? Just YouTube it! Looks difficult and dangerous/toxic chemicals….carefull.
