A True Warrior

December 14, 2009 | Filed Under 34th Street, City Streets and Sidewalks, New Yorkers, Portraits

It was an extremely cold day and I was on 34th Street.

I was trying to quickly take photos of the Macy’s Christmas window before my fingers froze.

All of a sudden, I heard a voice near me say, "Hey lady, take a photo of me, a true warrior."

I turned to see this man.  I smiled and took his photo, but it was too cold to stand around and have a conversation with him.

So, I left him standing there.

A block later, he walked past me, talking to himself.

  1. Ok..that was weird. I’ve not had anyone asking me to take photos of them..but many chased me away when I took photos of stuff or them. It was much easier with the digital camera, I easily whipped it out from my pocket and steal a shot or two..not possible with the current one :( Honestly, if I love a shot I could not live without..I’ve gone as far as buying junk so I can take a shot. Ah..all in a life of a photographer hehe :) How cold is cold? Its still raining loads here..mushrooms are growing in some potted plants (no kidding hehe)

  2. Anyone braving the cold in NYC is a true warrior. How about that blonde woman – no hat and unzippered for a few inches. Funny incident though. And a lovely window display.

  6. Interesting story. And not surprising that it happened. I mean, when you’re out and about on the streets taking shots, someone is bound to say something you least expect. I, too, wonder what this warrior’s story is.

Stay warm, lovely Paz! xo, mari

  7. Yes, do stay warm!

Camera technology is being revolutionized but those freezing fingers are still a real show-stopper as far as winter photography is concerned. I got myself real thin cotton gloves. They can stay on even while I use the camera but they don’t help much if there’s any wind at all.

  8. Great sequence, Paz. And I guess he is quite right when he called himself a TRUE WARRIOR; I mean, he must be to face all that cold with that good mood!

After that encounter, it could turn you into a true worrier!

Happy Holidays Paz, and get yourself some charcoal packets for your gloves. They sell them in stores like Paragon and are used by outdoor sports people in the winter. You hit the packet on a table top and it releases something that stays warm inside your gloves or mittens for a long time.

  13. It is interesting to me looking at the street photos of your city. This post reminded me of a story that my friend told me when she was in NY two years ago somewhere in autumn. She noticed many of people jogging there. So once while she was waiting with her friend to cross a street she made a joke and said in Bosnian: “Why all these people running when it is written on our forehead the number of the steps that we’ll make in our life”? At that moment, a passer-by stopped and asked: “Would you tell me how many of them it was written on my forehead?” He said that in the same language and went immediately without waiting for reply. LOL The world is sometimes really small. :-)

    Thanks for stopping by everyone.

Oh, by the way, Per, I wear fingerless gloves which help a little bit.
