Motion Thursday: F-16s

August 13, 2009 | Filed Under Motion Thursday, Photo Blogging Theme Day

Lately, I haven’t been able to participate in some of the various theme blog day events (Shadow Shot Sunday, Ruby Tuesday, Today’s Flowers, Think Green Thursday, etc…).  Life has been  getting in the way of my blogging fun.  *le sigh*

Mary, of 2 Frames per Second, recently invited me to participate in a new theme blog day that she’s created.  It’s called MOTION THURSDAY.  I was sorely tempted to participate and looked through my photo archives.

Back in April, baseball team, the New York Yankees, held an Opening Day in celebration of their new stadium. There were lots activity going on in, around, and over the stadium.  That included having F-16 fighter planes fly over the stadium.  In hopes of getting a photo of the fighter planes in motion, I decided to wait on the rooftop of a building near the stadium.

The amazing thing was that the planes did fly over the building, but it happened so suddenly.  Obviously, I didn’t know that the planes were so fast.  One minute it was quiet on the rooftop.  There was nothing in sight, in the sky, not even a bird.  The next minute, there was a tremendous noise (very scary, actually) and within a few seconds, the planes whizzed by.

They passed by so fast that I didn’t even have a chance to lift my camera to take their photo.  I was so mesmerized with the impressive sight of the four sharp-looking planes in formation that when I was finally able to think and react, I couldn’t think and react fast enough to press the power button on the camera.  It happened soooooo fast.  Toooooo fast.  Super fast motion.

The planes kept going and never returned.  However, I did manage to take a photo of those super fast planes — sort off.    I got their backside.  LOL!  Just barely.  Look closely.  You’ll see them.

This is my first entry for MOTION THURSDAY.

Go HERE to see other MOTION THURSDAY enteries and to learn how to participate.

  1. I think it’s a great shot – backside or not. But I do know the feeling of having just missed the shot you wanted. Very frustrating.

  3. Nice work Paz! Thanks for playing, those jets sure do move fast!! When shooting fly overs for opening games, i always hope for the Stealth Bomber, it flies pretty slow and LOW!

  5. Great shots, just the same! If you’re really interested in shooting aircraft, though, you need to come to Scotland! The entire Highlands area is pretty much a continuous airshow (including the occasional crash – as you can barely make out in this shot of ours). There’s an article here with tips on how to catch those shots, too!

  8. You did very well, considering the circumstances! I think I would have not even tried to capture them. Aren’t these jets so thrilling when they pass overhead like that, thundering in unison so powerfully that your heartstrings vibrate. Love it.

  9. Haha… They are fast! :D
At least you still managed to capture something. :D

I haven’t been blogging for few weeks now too. Extremely busy over uni year end interview. phew… hope to be back blogging ASAP.

  10. I compare this photograph to a flock of Canada geese in their migration north. Or, in your case, a flock arriving at Central Park.

  11. That backside view is terrific, Paz! It does put one in mind of birds in migration formation…very neat! Hope you have a great weekend ahead, my friend :o ) ((HUGS))

  12. Hi Paz
After 9-11 the sound of fighter jets overhead makes me so scared!
I was visiting my son in Denver once and a big formation of fighter jets flew overhead very low and I began to cry because I thought something bad happened. I felt foolish later when my son told me that the US Air Force Academy is in nearby Colorado Springs and sometimes they fly training missions overhead.

I had the same problem catching those jets when on Long Island near the airport on Veterans Day – they were low flying (practicing) and overhead before you knew it! All your photo shots are wonderful.

  15. Paz, I didn’t play motion Thursday but I just wanted to comment that you ended up with a superb shots! A couple of weeks ago I went over to the marina area across from LaGuardia Airport to try and shoot big planes coming in and landing. THEY were difficult to shoot too! I was able to get a shot or two though. :)
