Sleeping
May 28, 2009 | Filed Under Cathedrals/Churches, New Yorkers

In the early morning, a homeless man sleeping. Many churches will allow the homeless to sleep on their steps, instead of driving them away. The sleeper is lying inside one of the doorways of Riverside Church.

this is a very moving photo to me. it is so telling of what real life is really like.
Hi Paz
Sorry I haven’t been around ..it’s been so busy the past week.
This is a sad photo. There use to be a time a church could keep it’s door open for shelter but sadly that is not possible anymore because of crime and vandals.
There are homeless in every city –I saw so many in San Francisco. I wish there was a helpful solution.
This is a good coverage of reality. Sometimes life isn’t fair. It’s sad to see it that way.
Such a pity that the churches cannot open their doors to the homeless at night for them to sleep. I can understand the reasons for not doing so, but it’s a heartbreaking situation. Wish there was a solution…
What a sad photo, unfortunately reality, but it’s still sad to see.
The doors to the church are beautiful, and the splash of blue really made it colorful. I hope you’ve had a good week, can you believe it’s Friday already? Time is flying by so quickly.
Very sad to see…during my career at the jail, I saw many times the homeless commit petty crimes in order to be arrested and get into jail: a bed and food for at least a night or two.
Beautiful photo, but what a sad commentary on our society.
These images make me really sad. Unfortunately I see them quite a bit.
Such an interesting juxtaposition of a gorgeous door and a homeless sleeping man.
First, let me comment on the church door – what amazing detail and craftsmanship was taken when it was made… and the arches are beautiful!
Secondly – the homeless person – how poignant a statement is being made unintentionally in this picture! He is on the very step of a place which traditionally offers hope, peace, care, and so on, yet the door is closed when he needs it to open. I wonder if he ever takes advantage of the inside of the church during the day when help might be available to him?
I think you are an amazing photographer, Paz. Each of your pictures seems to be an editorial on life in some way – and so many of us respond to them. Thanks for sharing your gifted skill in pointing out these things to us…
Hugs!
It’s legal to walk anywhere in Scotland, so long as you’re not annoying people: you can cross their land, no problem. It’s legal to CAMP anywhere in some of the Nordic countries, so long as you’re 100m from people’s houses. Walking goes without saying.
Different world.
Paz: It is a shame to be homeless and you captured it wonderfully.
Heartbreaking capture of real life, Paz. Puts one’s own problems in perspective…
Paz, these are excellent, but really sad, images. Unfortunately they are reality.
Thanks, everyone, for your comments.
Best,
Paz
Oh poor men, so sad to see. You see scenes like this everywhere. Here in Holland, not so long ago we only saw homeless people like this in the big cities like Amsterdam but nowadays we also see them over here in the smaller towns in the countryside. Always wonder about their story.
