O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

Now that the Christmas holiday is over, I see this scene a lot –Christmas trees in the streets, waiting to be picked up for disposal.

Ed. Note:  Several of you have commented on what happens to the trees after they are thrown away.  The City Sanitation Department has a curbside collection and recycling program, which lasts from January 5-16.  During this time, they will come and pick up the trees left on the curbside, chip, and turn them into compost.

The Parks Department will then spread the mulch over places like the city parks, ball fields and community gardens.

The only requirement is that when you leave your tree to be picked up, you must remove all the tinsel and lights from the tree.  Also you must not put the tree in a plastic bag.

According to reports, the Sanitation Department collected and mulched 160,000 trees last year.

  2. This sad sight is one of my reasons for not being a fan whatsoever of cutting down trees for Christmas. Such a waste, poor, poor trees:/

  3. Always a bit sad to see…hey, for a minute there I thought I visited NYC. That’s a dead ringer for my car…except I’ve got an Obama and a “Life Is Good” stickers on display. :-)

  4. A different way of seeing Christmas trees indeed!
Here, on the contrary, they are immediately removed. :)

  5. I wonder whether they use them somewhere, or if they’re just recycled. I know that, in Louisiana, they strap them down & anchor them, so that the silt from the Mississippi will slow down & build islands … but what would they do with them in New York?

  6. That’s why I stopped using natural christmas trees … no need to cut them down for some days only!

I think it is great that they do that whole mulching thing. It makes so much sense.

  11. Thanks for that info on where Christmas trees go to die. That sounds funny doesn’t it? Me, I guess I worry less about trees than plastic bags.

  12. Paz: That would definetly make a big stack of trees.

  13. Most of our communities have Christmas tree bonfires. I’ve never attended one yet though!
