Shadow Shot Sunday: Lighthouse Shadow

November 29, 2008 | Filed Under Lighthouses, Photo Blogging Theme Day, Shadow Shot Sunday, Shadows, The Bronx

The shadow of a lighthouse cast against the wall of another building.  This lighthouse is located on top of a business building in the Bronx.  It’s not open to visitors.  Below is a photo of the lighthouse taken on a different day.

Happy Shadow Shot Sunday!

Ed. Note:  Someone asked whether there’s water nearby.  Yes, the building is near the Harlem River.  Another reader asked if the lighthouse works.  The answer is it does now.  The lighthouse is about 100 years old and for many years, it did not work.  In the late 90s, the lighthouse was fixed to commemorate it’s centennial anniversary.  I’ve passed by it in a car, at night, when it’s lit up.  It’s a nice sight — nice and bright.

  2. A lighthouse on top of a building in the Bronx? That seems like a really odd spot for a lighthouse! Great shadow shot. The photo of the lighthouse below is very pretty.

  4. Wonderful shot! Is this lighthouse a working one…or was it? Not something I think of when I think of the Bronx but then again, once upon a time that neck of the woods was quite a different looking place…

  10. Thank you for this one. It’s one of the NY lighthouses that I have missed. One of many, I’m sure. I have photos of many others. Only in NY could you find one throwing its shadow on another building. Great shot!

  19. Hi Sweet Repose: Thanks! ;-)

Hi Harriet: You know I can’t stay away for long. ;-)

Hi Rhonda: The Harlem River is close by.

Hi June: I should probably add this info in the post text. The lighthouse didn’t work for many years. It’s about 100 years old. The owners fixed it in the 1990s to commemorate its centennial anniversary. So, it works now.

Hi Gemma: Ahh! Cleopatra’s Needle, cool!

Hi Pietro: I’ve passed by it once at night. It looks very nice lit up.

    Hi Lily: Thanks!

Hi M.Kate: Thanks! I hope you’ve had a good weekend.

Hi Gina: Thanks! So far, I know that there are 3 lighthouses in the city. I have photos of two of them.

Hi Bobbie: Yes, I found the shadow on the building fascinating and probably wouldn’t have noticed it, if not for Shadow Shot Sunday. ;-)

Hi Jienjte: There’s lots to discover in the city. ;-)

    Hi Annette: Thanks! ;-)

Hi East: Thanks! I’m glad I spotted the shadow. It was totally unexpected.

Hi Elizabeth: There are two more in the city. I have photos of two of them.

Hi Jan: Well, it’s 100 years old. I think the lighthouse was needed back when it was built since the river is close by.

    Hi Dianne: Thanks!

Hi Olga: I’m glad you see something you like. ;-)

Hi Gil: I hope I didn’t gain any weight over the Thanksgiving meal and yes, I did survive the sad news on t.v. I look forward to seeing more of your fantastic Tunisian visit photos.

    Thanks for stopping by, everyone.
