Pigeons in Flight

November 20, 2008 | Filed Under Animals, Birds, New York City Wildlife, Pigeons

I had to stop and watch these pigeons as they flew from one direction to the next in formation but at a sort of frantic pace.  Moments later, I realized why?  There was a hawk also flying around.  It soared in the distance, looking to make a meal out of one of the pigeons.  Fascinating!

  12. Great polka dots of pigeons -it’s astute of you to recognize the hawks’ presence and how it affects the birds around the city.
Since the red tailed hawks are becoming more prolific in NYC, it’s more likely that they’re visable.

I saw one swoop down in front of me in Central Park and nab a rat hidden in the bush, take it up to a tree limb and dine.

    They’re so efficient.

Hope the hawk didn’t catch a pigeon.

  22. Oh those poor pigeons! Stunning shots Paz, but they’re kind of sad now I know the story behind them. Hope the hawk didn’t manage to catch one! I don’t think we have hawks over here. I’m glad, because they don’t sound very nice to me!

  23. Great shots..I’d take off too, if I saw a hawk flying around..
Every time a hawk gets in my oldest daughters yard, she runs out with a broom flying about telling him to get going..once she witnessed a hawk taking a robin and she has never forgotten it.

I sometimes see these guys soaring around. It’s incredible that the pigeons know what hawks are. Great photos!

  26. Hi Kitty: Thanks! I was excited to get my hawk photo, although it could have been a better photo. ;-) Yeah, I think it’s incredible that the pigeons know what hawks are and that the hawks know what pigeons are. ;-)
