I’m not sure what this is called — A fire boxA red box?  An emergency box?  Yeah, that’s it!  I think that’s what it’s called — an emergency box.  I wonder if it works.   I’ve seen very few around the city but have never paid much attention to them, till… Ruby Tuesday.    ;-)

Visit WORK OF THE POET to see a list of fun Ruby Tuesday posts.  Happy Ruby Tuesday, all!

  1. Looks like an emergency alarm for police and fire department. Nice photos capturing Ruby Tuesday Reds. Have a great RT.

  2. Never seen anything like that before. Must be an “antique” from the pre cellphone age.

  3. Well, there it is, all red and everything, just waiting for something to happen. It looks so important; I wonder if it will be up to the challenge if and when it comes. My mind is spinning with this one. Good job!

  4. That is RED :) I like it a lot.

  5. I remember those from when I lived in NY years ago. Definitely bright red! Thanks for visiting and happy RT!

  6. Red is attention-getting, and you need to find it in a hurry when an emergency is imminent or upon us. If you are near it, it probably gets the attention of 9-1-1 faster than a cell phone call being routed wirelessly. Happily, the graffiti artists seem to have missed that box. Happy Ruby Tuesday!

  7. Something unusual which I’ve never seen before. I wonder what’s the the percentage of citizens knowing the use of that and operating it for an emergency :P
    Happy Ruby Tuesday :)

  12. Paz, that first one looks like the monolith in Planet of the Apes. It’s standing there so strongly! I like it very much.

  18. Interesting that I have not seen an emergency box for ages. I can’t remember where I was when I saw it. It is neat to see one again.

  19. Oh how neat! Over here we have ‘press for emergency’ buttons located at bus/train stations, but not big cool red boxes like that around the place!

  27. A “Call Box” maybe?
We have them all over downtown, but they’re basically just phones hard-wired to 911. The universities have them all over campus too to call in the various campus police agencies if needed.

  28. I’ve never seen such a thing. I like the photos. I’ve never been in your city. I’ve seen it only on the TV so it is always interesting to me looking at the photos you have taken on the streets during everyday and routine life.

  29. Well they’re BRIGHT enough! They’ll certainly catch your attention in an emergency!

  30. they never worked! I remember trying to use one back in the 70s, I saw a car on fire and it was parked near a tree. A doorman from a nearby building was far more helpful LOL

they make great photos though :)

Hi Napaboaniya APAD: Welcome! Actually, I think there’s zero percentage because I don’t believe the box works and no one uses it these days.

LOL! Hi Jim: Welcome. They seemed to be friends, talking on the corner, waiting for the light to change. When it did, they crossed the street, still talking.

Hi Dora: LOL! I think you are right! The museum next!

Hi Pietro: I don’t’ recall ever seeing them in Italy when I was there.

Hi Lily: I believe they’ve been removed in a lot of places.

LOL! Hi Sara: I like the idea of it being like a monolith. Very cool! ;-)

Hi Britt-Arnhild: The box is used to call the fire department or the police when there is an emergency.

Hi Christine: Let’s think of it as an aide, although it no longer works. ;-)

Hi East Gwillimbury WOW! : I’ve been noticing a lot of red and shadows nowadays! ;-)
