My First Starlings
March 29, 2008 | Filed Under Birds, New York City Wildlife, Starlings

I’ve been trying to take photographs of these birds for some time but they’ve been too quick for me and fly away in a flash. I finally got lucky with these two. Yay! Here they are on the busy streets of NYC. They manage to find food and not get run over by passing or parking cars.

Shooting starlings, eh? Sorry, I’m reminded of an episode of Fawlty Towers on the tube. Not to worry, the birds escaped unharmed there as well…
I know starlings are supposed to be bad for our native bird populations, but between their iridescence, speckles and song, ya gotta enjoy them!
Oh good, Per: I’m glad the birds are okay.
Terry: I don’t know anything about Starlings. I wonder why they’re bad for the native bird population. I guess I’ll go do some research. I do love the way they look.
Thanks for stopping by, all!

Hi Paz – Starlings were introduced to New York in the late 1800s. They compete with native birds for nesting sites, often driving the native birds out. I still like them!
Very, very interesting to me, Terry. Thanks for the information. I like to learn something new everyday.

I quite like starlings. they are a member of the crow family. There is some nesting somewhere nearby and they come to me and my neighbours garden for food for their babies! I see them with babies come in to the garden, get some food (bread) and give it to their babies while in the garden!
have you ever seen a baby starling? If you did was it in a flock/pair?
